Batik

Batik is a traditional Indonesian textile craft. It can also be used as a medium for making pictorial art that resonates with South East Asian culture. Our programs are safe and systematic approach to introduce participants to the cultural aspect of batik and be guided on using traditional tools for waxing, applying dyes, and through the many other processes involved to complete an authentic batik art.

These are the various batik-art programs we offer:

Basic Batik Painting Techniques (Module 1)

A safe and systematic introduction to the art of traditional batik painting.
No pre-requisite skills required. Learn to handle the tjanting for waxing and basic dye painting techniques. Produce up to two 20cm x 20cm batik art.

Class available daily (by appointment) except Sundays  .
Time: 10am or 2pm (2 hours per module).
Price: $55. All materials provided (please do not buy any art materials prior to attending).

Not recommended for children below 9 years old as the process involves hot wax. Adults bringing children do so at their sole discretion and shall be held responsible for their child’s action as this is a low supervision activity meant for adults in a working artist studio. 

Intermediate Batik Techniques (Module 2)

Progression from module 1. Apply basic techniques on bigger size painting (A3) while exploring advanced waxing and dyeing techniques. Learn colour fast treatment and removal of wax.

Class available daily (by appointment) except Sundays  
Time: 10am or 2pm (2 hours per module)
Price: $55. All materials provided (please do not buy any art materials prior to attending).

Batik Studio Practice

Participants must have completed both modules 1 & 2.

Develop batik painting skills at your own pace by attempting your own painting projects. Instructor artists will assist you to discover techniques and refine your skills. 

Available daily except Sundays (by appointment)
Time: Between 10am to 6pm (Hourly rate)*
Price: $10 per hour. Basic materials provided. Additional materials can be bought separately.

Group Batik Workshop (Team Building)

Group art activities ideal for tour groups, corporate R&R or team building activity.
Programmes are available for 2 or 3 hours engagement. Participants get to do more for longer duration.

Book your preferred day or time (subject to availability).
Our gallery capacity 50 pax, Studio capacity 30 pax.

Community Batik

The Community Batik Project is a highly engaging group activity to experience our South East Asian cultural heritage while creating a collective work of art. Popular at public events and appropriate for corporate team-building sessions. The length and duration can vary according to your requirements. Upon completion, these artwork are proudly installed at the work-place or public areas.This video link would give you a better understanding of Kamal’s community batik engagement. 
The price is for a complete engagement package involving on-the-spot freestyle waxing by artist, facilitation of activity, all materials involved, post-production for removal of wax and colour fixing. The finished cloth will be delivered unframed.Please note that we do not touch up the work of participants after the event. Additional services available at additional cost.

Mini Batik

Mini Batik (No hot waxing)Mini batik is a pre-waxed cloth measuring 20x20cm mounted on a paper stretcher. Samples can be viewed on our website.We sell individual pieces, materials or individually packed kits consisting of one pre-waxed cloth, one paint brush, one plastic palette and three colour dyes (red, blue, yellow). This makes a good gift and is practical for DIY activity.We provide facilitators to manage the events. Material costs included. More facilitators are required for bigger engagements. One facilitator is for engaging not more than 20 persons simultaneously.Should you wish to manage the session yourself, you can buy materials like batik dyes at $4.50 per 125ml (can colour up to 30 pieces), palettes and brushes from us.Best to discuss your situation and we will advice the solution.

Batik Demonstration

A showcase of batik painting for cultural theme event. An artist set-up with artefacts and samples to talk about batik painting,answer questions and guide participants in some hands-on experience of batik making.

$300 (First Hour) + $200 (subsequent hour). 

School Art Enrichment Programme (NAC/AEP)

We offer batik painting programmes in schools. Our programmes are endorsed by the National Arts Council of Singapore; Arts Education Programme (NAC-AEP) and are eligible for the 50% Tote Board Arts Grant Subsidy.

We have varied programmes for different levels from primary to secondary schools as well as tertiary institution. Students will be introduced to the art and craft of batik painting through hands-on experience and gradually learn to use traditional tools such as the ‘tjanting’ to create authentic batik paintings with wax resist technique. Lesson extend to advance batiking techniques and how to make fabrics colourfast.
