Singapore may be a bustling metropolis, but beneath its modern facade lies a rich tapestry of cultures. This summer, we welcomed a group of students from Hong Kong on a unique learning adventure to explore Singapore Malay culture.
Their journey began at Geylang Serai, a vibrant market buzzing with local flavors. The students tantalized their taste buds with authentic Malay cuisine, savoring the sights and sounds of this cultural hub.
Next, they stepped into our artist studio, where they were introduced to the captivating world of Malay dance. The Inang, Zapin, and Joget genres came alive as the students learned basic movements, transforming the studio into a space of cultural exchange.
Following the energetic dance workshop, the students delved into the beauty of traditional Malay attire. They explored the rich symbolism and vibrant colors, gaining a deeper appreciation for this art form.
The creative spirit continued with a batik painting workshop. Using the cold wax method, the students meticulously crafted their own batik masterpieces, a unique souvenir to carry a piece of Singapore home.
This experience served as a reminder that Singapore offers more than just towering skyscrapers and world-class shopping. It’s a city brimming with cultural pockets waiting to be explored. By immersing themselves in these vibrant traditions, the students gained a deeper understanding of Singapore’s multicultural identity.
